Leather, lining and glue: what to inspect before you buy reps

Most buying guides talk about shape and colour. The materials decide how a pair feels after a month, and how it ages. Here is what to look at before you spend money on reps.

Leather: grain, hand and finish

Full-grain leather keeps the natural surface of the hide. It creases in fine lines, takes polish and develops a patina. Corrected grain has been sanded and coated, which can look uniform but tends to crack where the shoe flexes. Ask the seller what the upper is made from and request a close-up in daylight. If the leather looks flat and reflects like plastic, it probably is coated.

Check the cut too. The best panels come from the shoulder or the back, where the grain is tight. Loose grain near the toe will wrinkle early and never settle.

Lining and insole

A leather lining breathes and holds its shape. A textile lining can be fine on a runner, but on a leather sneaker it should be smooth and firmly attached, not loose at the heel. The insole should have some cushion and a clean edge. Glued-in cardboard is easy to spot: it flexes stiffly and smells like paper.

The sole and the stitch

Stitched soles are a good sign on cupsole styles, because the thread locks the upper to the sole. Look at the spacing and whether the stitches sit in the groove. On moulded soles, check the sidewall for bubbles or sharp seams. A clean sidewall and even stitch line say more than a logo.

Glue and smell

A strong chemical smell is not normal. It usually means the pair was packed before the adhesive cured. That can lead to yellowing, separation and a smell that lingers in the box. A good pair smells faintly of leather and rubber. If you open the box and the smell hits you, send it back or ask for another pair.

What to ask before you buy

  • What is the upper made from, and can I see a daylight close-up?
  • What is the lining, and how is the insole attached?
  • Is the sole stitched or moulded, and can I see the sidewall?
  • How long has the pair cured before packing?
  • What does the pair weigh in my size?

How we choose materials

We keep the range small so we can stand behind the leather. Full-grain and suede uppers, leather or breathable textile linings, cushioned insoles and stitched or moulded rubber soles, depending on the style. If a pair feels thin or smells sharp, it does not go on the site.

Every order includes QC photos before dispatch, so you can judge the material yourself rather than trusting a product page.

Inspect Before Buying details

A practical guide to leather grain, linings, soles and glue. We keep the information practical: materials, fit, QC and delivery, written by the people who pack the pairs. Inspect Before Buying is checked against the reference before it is offered, and again before it ships.

Fit, care and delivery

Measure your foot at the end of the day, compare it with the insole and tell us the size you wear in the same type of shoe. Leather should be wiped with a soft damp cloth and air-dried away from heat. Suede should be brushed dry. Approved orders leave Guangzhou with tracking, and we share the number as soon as the carrier scans the parcel.

Browse the full collection or message the studio for a close-up and a size check. For general leather care, see this leather reference.
